Men were the heads of households, but the role of women as caretakers and producers of goods, such as food and clothing, was equally important. With the first stages of industrialization, these patterns changed. Increasingly, men began working outside of the home.
The term 'gender role' was first coined by John Money in 1955 during the course of his study of intersex individuals to describe the manners in which these individuals express their status as a male or female, in a situation where no clear biological assignment exists.
Ann Oakley (1972) was one the first social scientists to distinguish the concept of gender from the concept of sex. According to Oakley, gen- der parallels the biological division of sex into male and female, but it involves the division and social valuation of masculinity and femininity.
Sexism may be defined as an ideology based on the belief that one sex is superior to another. It is discrimination, prejudice, or stereotyping based on gender, and is most often expressed toward women and girls.
Gender bias refers to a person receiving different treatment based on the person's real or perceived gender identity.
Face-ism or facial prominence is the relative prominence of the face in the portrayal of men and women; media tend to focus more on men's faces and women's bodies.

Generally speaking, men have chiseled features and larger bones, while feminine faces tend to have softer, rounder contours. For example, the brow ridge is often softer or not present in women.

For the U.S., the average for men and women came a bit older than the mean, with 31 being the most beautiful age for women, and 34 for being the most beautiful for men.
But the heart shape, otherwise more commonly known as a V-shaped face, has been scientifically proven to be the most visually attractive face shape to have. Heart-shaped faces like those of Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon are deemed as 'mathematically beautiful'.
People with oblong and square face shapes have broad and beautiful smiles, which is why they have the most attractive face shape. In Asia, people admire the v-shaped or heart face because it makes one look slim.
